A Window of Opportunity – Save Energy and Stay Warm
Hopefully you prepared your home well for the winter, which included any window repairs that were needed. January isn’t the best time to be fixing drafty windows, but unfortunately it’s when they become noticeable.
There are things you can do to get you through the cold weather more comfortably.
The first thing you want to do is detect where drafts are coming from. Usually you can feel around the edge of Windows to determine if there drafty. If you can rattle a window or door, that indicates an improper fit and most likely an air leak.
Pick a nice sunny day and caulk the edges of your windows and doors on the outside of your house. Note that if you have vinyl windows and they were installed correctly they shouldn’t require outdoor caulking. Older wood windows need a lot more TLC. Caulk outdoors around every piece of wood including window frames. You can use clear caulking for a cleaner look.
Indoors, apply weatherstripping to your windows. The type of weatherstripping you use and the process will differ depending on the type of windows you have. For a do-it-yourself fix, we recommend weatherstripping tape, which is easy to apply.
For summer homes or for windows that are hidden from view, you may want to apply a winter insulator kit. This method basically shrink wraps a plastic cover over your window, blocking any air leaks.
Once you’ve sealed up the best you can, there is one more decorative idea that will keep the cold weather outdoors where it belongs. Hang thermal insulated, floor-length curtains and drapes. Winter curtains are great investment and an easy seasonal change.
