Cleaning 101 – Vacuuming

Vacuuming Your Home Like A Professional

C's House Cleaning Vacuuming Tips Southampton East Hampton

Make sure there is a bag before you start vacuuming, if you vacuum without a bag it can do irreparable damage to the motor of the vacuum.

Number One Rule: Always Clean From Top To Bottom

Start by vacuuming at the highest part of your home, starting as far away from the stairs. Vacuum towards the stairs in a methodical fashion. Vacuuming in vertical increments, cutting each room into sections.

  • Lift and vacuum under anything weighing less than 15lbs.

  • All corners

  • Under the bed, be sure to check that you got all the dust (allergy buster)

  • Lift up small items in your closet to vacuum the floors.*Dust Bunny’s favorite hiding spot*

When vacuuming the stairs it is best to ignore our number one rule, yes it’s okay to do that just this ONE time, and start from the bottom. This prevents dust from blowing onto your freshly cleaned floor and reduces the chance of falling down the stairs.

When tackling area rugs we advise that you vacuum the rug and then shake it out before lifting and placing to the side. The corners of area rugs are a trap for dirt and debris and should be cleaned every time you vacuum.

Jenn’s favorite hiding spots for dust:

1. Under the Stove – You would be surprised what you will find under there. At one home I found 3 wooden spoons, a dog toy, and a pill bottle. Can’t find that missing bottle opener?

2. Behind the Dryer – This is a constant battle, especially if your home has the amount of laundry that mine does. Vacuuming behind and on the sides of the dryer is needed if you are sensitive to dust.

3. Dust Bunnies in the Closet – Closets are a breeding ground for dust. It is best to keep as much off the floors as possible. Be sure to vacuum under all shoes especially ones that you don’t wear regularly; for women this could be a task all by itself.

4. Behind the T.V. and Computer – Electrical wires seem to attract dust and let’s be honest, how often do you vacuum behind your T.V. console?  This is also a place where the bugs of your home go to die, it appears. Be sure to vacuum this area regularly to keep your home in tip top shape!

Happy Vacuuming!
