House cleaning 101- Wood Furniture Care
Proper Wood Furniture Care
Be sure you know what type of wood you are dealing with, the manufacturer will usually give you special care instructions. Caring for your wood furniture is safest when you follow these tips :
- Dampen a corner of a microfiber cloth (Yellow) with a small amount of dish soap or very mild cleanser.
- Go to an inconspicuous area and clean the wood. Pay attention to what is coming off on the microfiber cloth. If the area is coming clean continue. If the wood is changing condition-stop immediately.
- Wash all sides tops and bottoms of the furniture for crevices okay to use a small toothbrush to really clean the area.
- Dry thoroughly.
After cleaning the wood furniture you will need to protect it with wax. Butchers wax (bees-wax) is a favorite of ours. Wax it on, form a haze and remove with a dry microfiber cloth. We do this process every 6 months. Pay attention to manufacturer labels for wood care.
- Avoid direct sunlight it will cook the finish; causing fading and cracks.
- Climate control of your furniture should be 68-74 degrees. If necessary get a humidifier to avoid drying out any wood furniture you own.
- Do not place hot or cold drinks on the furniture, be sure to invest in good quality coasters.
- Avoid nail polish remover or heavy oils, they will eat right through the wood furniture.
- Do not store wood furniture in a basement without the proper climate control.
- Don’t polish any handles that are on the furniture as you don’t want to get any metal polishes on your wood.
For regular maintenance on your wood furniture: Use a slightly dampened cloth – to remove dust. Immediately followed by a dry microfiber cloth (Yellow). Questions? Leave us a comment below, we absolutely love feedback!
