Pet Safety: Keeping Fido Frost Free and Safe on Winter Walks
January is “National Walk Your Pet Month” so we could not think of a better time for some tips to make Fido’s winter walk a safe, frost free one!
Winter can be harsh in New York and where there’s snow, there’s salt and ice melt….everywhere. It’s just unavoidable. The de-icing chemicals that make travel safe for us can be harmful to our beloved dogs when we take them for a walk.
Most ice melting substances are toxic chemicals and can cause drying, cracking, chemical burns on paw pads and if ingested, can cause serious illness. Luckily, there are some tips and products out there that can help keep your dog’s paws happy and healthy this winter.
Keep it pet-friendly
- Prevent ice from forming on walkways using this DIY pet-safe solution BEFORE a storm is due to hit.
- Keep pet-friendly de-icers on hand for those mornings when you wake up to a frozen walkway. There are several pet-friendly de-icers available for use on your own walkway and driveway. Look for a salt and chloride free product and if it has warning labels on it, avoid it. Even rock salt can be harmful. In general, if a product is not safe for you or your children, it’s not safe for your pets.
Nice and Balmy
Prevent snow and ice from sticking and keep paws and pads healthy and moisturized with this all natural balm. Ingredients are readily available in most health food stores like Whole Foods.
These Boots Are Made For Walking
If you are forced to walk your dog in heavily salted and chemically treated areas, doggie boots might be your best option. Your pup’s paws will be safe, warm and super cute!
We hope these tips help your pet have a safe, warm, winter season!
