Flu Prevention For Your Family

Tips For Flu Prevention in Your Household

What are you doing to protect you and your family from infections and the flu? If your answer involves antibacterial soaps and wipes you aren’t taking the right approach.

First, it hurts the pocket. Antibacterial wipes such as Wet Ones can go for anywhere from $2.30 for 40 wipes to $12.00 for a pack of 120 wipes.  You can buy 2,000 alcohol wipes on Amazon for $23. Alcohol wipes are much cheaper to buy and come in tiny packets that can be tucked away in your purse easily.

Second, alcohol is much more effective for killing germs in your home. It is will kill germs on contact within seconds and does not need water to be effective.  When using hand sanitizer make sure that the active ingredient is ethyl alcohol, at least 60%. Products that contain Triclosan can actually hurt your immune system and increase your chances at getting sick.

Now that you have your alcohol wipes, here is a list of things that you should sanitized regularly to help reduce the chances of your family getting sick…

1. Disinfect all regularly touched surfaces. If someone in your household is sick or has the flu there are steps to take for flu prevention. Use alcohol wipes to sanitize frequently handled surfaces such as:

  • Light Switches
  • Door Knobs
  • Faucets
  • Handles
  • Remotes
  • Phones
  • Tablets
  • Pens and Pencils
  • Steering Wheel and Shifter
  • (Don’t forget the fridge handle)

2. Keep germs out of your workplace. Your computer keyboard and mouse can have more germs than your toilet. Be sure to wipe these down with alcohol wipes and keep from spreading the flu between family members. Don’t forget your desktop as well as any cabinets and handles that may have shared usage.

3.  Keep your environment sanitary. Wash your linens at least once a week. If any member of your household has the flu you may want to wash them more often, especially the pillow cases. You don’t want an already sick person sleeping in the germs. Washing your bath and dish towels more frequently is a great idea as well.

4. Wash your hands frequently.  It is advised to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds to make sure the germs are killed. Once again, antibacterial soap is not suggested because it can actually increase your chance of getting sick.
