Prepping for Green Resolutions
You may know that C’s is a Certified Green Cleaning Service Company. This is something we believe in firmly. We also promote green practices because we know how important they are to our neighbors and our customers. We thought we’d share a few ideas with you on how to incorporate some green into your New Year’s resolutions.
Become a Recycle Disciple
Whether you’re a self hauler or use a private carting service, you can decrease your footprint in 2016 by adding to your recycling routine. Recycling laws vary depending on where you live.
For Southampton residents, everything you need to know can be found in the recycling guide. Notice, for example, that Christmas trees are accepted free of charge at recycling centers from January 1 through January 31 (limit 3).
East Hampton has a list of recyclable items, as well as a list of optional recyclables on their website. Why not review the optional list and resolve to add a few of these items to your next recycling center trip?
Both East end towns offer STOP (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) days, which gives you the opportunity to recycle items that are not regularly accepted. Check your town’s website for dates and locations as well as recyclable items.
Regardless, the importance of recycling is not worrying about breaking the law, it’s about the planet, your children, and their children.
The Dirt on Greener Gardens
It’s a bit early to be thinking about gardening, but if organic gardening or pesticide-free landscaping is something you’ve always had an interest in – why not learn about it now? Sounds like a great winter project, and before you know it, you’ll be ready to plant.
Create a plan to determine exactly what new or different results you’d like to see outdoors this coming year. If you’d like to cut down on harmful or dangerous lawn care products, you’ll see online that there are natural products from familiar brands such as Scott’s, or full-organic brands such as Safer, Dr. Earth, and others. For tips on organic vegetable gardening, see treehugger.com, planetnatural.com, or a number of other informative websites.
Whatever your goals are, look into products and plants that reduce the need for watering. You’ll save water and some money in the process.
It’s Electric
If you’re purchasing a new car in 2016, you should be thinking hybrid. And while you’re at it, why not electric? There are so many choices now compared to just a few years ago. Sedans, SUVs, minivans, even trucks; and they have a variety of features you would never expect in non-gas guzzlers. Check out JD Powers or Edmonds to search for your new green car. Of course color choice is based on your own preference.
The Year to go Solar
As I drive through my neighborhood, I notice more and more homes with solar panels. What do they know that I don’t know? Is it time to go solar, or were they hit with a slick sales pitch? Up until now a big focus for solar power on Long Island has been for residential homes, but commercial businesses are beginning to surge ahead. You’ll have to do very careful homework for such a big investment, but we know that in addition to the importance of using new energy sources, there are a number of rebates, tax credits, and smart financing available for solar conversion. Again, beware as some of these opportunities for residential homes may be expiring at the end of next year.
